What to feed a Cockapoo for a long, healthy life.

Cockapoos are usually enthusiastic eaters and prone to an extra pound or two if you let them. Here is the feeding approach we share with our new families — it's what we feed our own dogs.

The single biggest influence on your dog's long-term health, beyond genetics, is what goes in their bowl every day. Cockapoos generally do brilliantly on fresh, balanced, lightly processed food — and they are typically the dog that does best in coat and skin when the food is wholesome.

Use the food we use

We feed Butternut Box to all of our own dogs. It is veterinary-formulated, lightly cooked, portion-controlled and delivered to your door. We have partnered with them because we trust their food and we have seen the difference it makes in coat condition, digestion and energy levels.

How much, how often

Puppies need three to four meals a day until about six months. From six months, two meals a day works well. Keep portions measured — use the kitchen scales for the first six months. Most Cockapoos will happily eat whatever is in front of them; the portion control is for you, not them.

Treats

Keep treats small and count them into the daily ration. Train with the dog's regular food for everyday work, save higher value treats for new skills or recall training around distractions.

What to avoid

  • Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic and xylitol.
  • Cooked bones of any kind.
  • Fatty scraps from the Sunday roast.
  • Anything labelled “complete” with a long list of unrecognisable ingredients.

Weight and body condition

You should be able to feel — but not see — the ribs. From above, the waist should tuck in just behind the ribs. If you cannot feel the ribs without pressing hard, it is time to trim a small amount off each meal.
