Your puppy has already been crate trained before coming home. They are familiar with sleeping and relaxing in a crate, so your job is simply to continue the routine consistently.
Place the crate downstairs in a quiet, comfortable area and keep it in the same position. Make it welcoming with suitable bedding and a safe toy.
Use the crate
- At bedtime
- For daytime naps
- When your puppy needs quiet time
- For short periods when you cannot supervise them
The crate should feel like your puppy’s safe and peaceful space. Never use it as punishment.
Your puppy may cry briefly during the first few nights because the home and surroundings are unfamiliar. Remain calm and consistent. Avoid moving the crate, repeatedly returning to them or allowing them to sleep in your bed.
Take your puppy outside to the toilet immediately before placing them in the crate and again as soon as they wake. Young puppies should not be left inside for long periods during the day.
Consistency gives dogs security. Continuing the crate routine from the first day will help your puppy grow into a confident dog that can settle comfortably on their own.
